With the global economy facing its worst recession in decades, what are the biggest threats to open markets in this era of globalization? Is the U.S. trade deficit an indication of ‘unfair’ trading practices? Does free trade help or hinder human rights progress in developing countries? Is there such a thing as ‘free but fair’ trade?

The World Affairs Council presents Daniel Griswold, Director of the Center for Trade Policy Studies at the Cato Institute in Washington D. C.

Since joining Cato in 1997, Mr. Griswold has authored or co-authored major studies on globalization, trade, and immigration, including the upcoming Cato book, Mad about Trade: Why Main Street America Should Embrace Globalization. He has authored articles for major newspapers and has appeared on C-SPAN, CNN, PBS, Fox News and other national TV and radio networks. He has testified before House and Senate committees and federal agencies on a range of trade and immigration issues. Before joining Cato, he was editorial page editor of a daily newspaper, the Colorado Springs (Colorado) Gazette, and congressional press secretary for former Rep. Vin Weber (R-Minnesota). He holds a bachelor's degree in journalism from the University of Wisconsin at Madison and a diploma in economics and a master's degree in the Politics of the World Economy from the London School of Economics.
